7 ideas for your business newsletter

Why use newsletters?

Newsletters are a great way to connect directly with your target audience. This type of e-marketing builds relationships and trust with both your current and potential clients and is a great way to keep you at the forefront of their minds should they need your service or product. Building an email list is crucial to building your small business so have a sign up link on your website and share this across your social media platforms.

There is some great software about to help you make your newsletters look professional, I personally use Mailchimp as I find it very easy to use.  It gives you templates to work with, statsistics once you’ve sent your campaign and is free up to a certain number of subscribers. It also makes sure your emails comply with the spam regulations and gives people the option to unsubscribe should they wish.

So now you undertsand why you should be sending newsletters (see my more detailed blog about this) and how certain software can help you make them look fabulous, what on earth do you write about?! This seems to be a real problem for people and they feel that people just won’t be interested in what they have to say.  If people weren’t interested they wouldn’t sign up, so don’t disappoint!  Here are just a few of my ideas to get you started writing and remember: don’t get carried away and send people a daily email as people will unsubscribe.  I only send my newsletters once a month but it will depend on the industry you work in as to how often you need to pop into people’s inboxes.

7 ideas for your newsletter topic:

  1. A how to
    Show your audience how to do something so that they gain value from your advice.  Could you tell them how to write a policy or share a video on how to make that perfect flower arrangement?
  2. Case study
    Give an example of a certain problem or task that you have solved for your client and how doing so has helped their business – have you helped them reduce their costs or brought them new customers?
  3. Employee profile
    Tell your clients about your staff members, this makes you look human and helps your customers get to know you and your team better.
  4. Business news
    A newsletter is a great way to share news about your business such as new staff, an award you have won or your new office location.
  5. Questions and Answers
    Have a Q & A newsletter. If you get asked the same questions often then chances are lots of people are wondering the same thing, address these in your E-Marketing.
  6. Giveaways
    These don’t need to break the bank but can be a great way to increase engagement and give those that have taken the time to sign up to your newsletter an exclusive little something back to say thank you.  Ideas could include a promotional discount, free product, or entry to a raffle.
  7. Testimonials
    You can’t beat a recommendation from someone else so when you get these make sure you share them via your newsletter.  If you can, use a video as there’s nothing better than actually seeing the ‘real’ person behind that testimonial.

9 email marketing tips to help your business grow

Sending newsletters and direct emails are a great way to engage with your customers and the beauty is you can contact them directly via their inbox. If used correctly this form of marketing can build relationships with both current and potential customers who will then be more likely to work with you or continue to work with you in the future.

It doesn’t cost anything to use some of the email marketing software out there and they often offer you templates and campaign tracking.  I love to use MailChimp but there are others available of course.

Here are some tips to help improve your business with email marketing:

1.  Have a goal
As with any part of your marketing strategy, you should set a goal for your email marketing campaign.  Why are you sending your email, what will your client gain from reading it and what do you want them to do after they’ve read it. Do you want them to visit your website, follow you on social media or book an appointment (this is known as ‘the call to action’)?

2. Don’t spam people 
With GDPR now in place make sure you are sending emails only to those who have given their permission. MailChimp has a built-in GDPR signup form which also makes it easy for people to unsubscribe from your email list which is now a requirement.

3.  Make signing up simple
Make it easy for people to sign up (have a look at my newsletter form) and don’t ask for too much information as it will put people off.  You will have a sign-up form on your website but you can also promote this across your social media platforms and put a link in your email signature.  Remember to tell people on the sign-up page what information they can expect to receive from you and how often

4. Quality not quantity

When people sign up to receive your emails they become part of your ‘list’.  Remember that you need quality rather than quantity.  It’s better to have 100 people that will use your service in the future than 500 people that will never interact with you.

5. Don’t just sell
Don’t sell, sell, sell as people will unsubscribe.  Use your newsletter/email to give advice that will benefit your audience.  It’s okay to send an email to notify your list that you’re running a special promotion and to include these in your newsletter but don’t make it all about selling your service or product.

6. Timing is key
When you send your newsletters send them at the right time for your target audience – for example, the last thing on a Friday afternoon may not be ideal depending on your target audience.  Make sure that once you do send your email that you are in the office in case you need to respond to any enquiries that might follow.

7. Schedule time to be consistent
Schedule time in your marketing to write your newsletters/emails.  Don’t, however, overdo it – people will unsubscribe if you bombard them with daily information.

8. Create interesting subject topics
Make your subject line interesting so your client wants to find out more – think about how the information in your email will benefit them.

9. Evaluate
Make sure you evaluate the success of your email marketing.  Most of the software available contains an analysis section so you can see who opened your email and if they clicked through using a link you provided.  You can then use this information to tweak your future content.
